Elvis’ last year in Tupelo was spent living on “The Hill”, which was one to two black neighborhoods in Tupelo. While living on The Hill, he befriended Sam Bell. Sam has shared many of his stories of playing and getting into mischief with Elvis with us.
The house is gone, but Sam showed us the corner where it stood.
While playing in the streets one day, Elvis caught the sounds of the ladies singing Sanctified Gospel spilling from the windows of the church. The ladies noticed him peering through the window and invited him to come in and join in the singing. Elvis obliged.
The church is located across the street from the former Mayhorn Grocery.
