Shake Rag

Shake Rag was the black equivalent to East Tupelo for whites.  The unskilled laborers lived in Shake Rag & East Tupelo.  Both communities had unjustified bad reputations, but it was the place to go for all the vices life had to offer.  Liquor, women, gambling, dancing, juke joints – Shake Rag offered it all and several churches too.  Bo Clanton carried a young Elvis into Shake Rag, where all the blues musicians gathered when they were in town.  On one such occasion, Elvis heard Muddy Waters.

The Tupelo CVB and BancorpSouth Arena occupy the property today.  With BancorpSouth, music still happens on the historic sites
